5-Inch vs. 6-Inch Gutters: Why Size Matters in Texas Downpours

A 6-inch gutter holds 40 percent more water and costs 15 percent more. In flash-flood country, that math is not subtle.

Standard residential gutters in the U.S. are 5 inches wide. That is fine for most of the country. In Texas — where a typical "thunderstorm" drops more rain in 20 minutes than Seattle gets in two weeks — 5-inch gutters are routinely overwhelmed. Most of the new construction in DFW since 2018 specs 6-inch gutters as standard for a reason.

The capacity math

A 5-inch K-style gutter holds 1.2 gallons per linear foot. A 6-inch K-style gutter holds 1.7 gallons per linear foot — about 40 percent more capacity. Combined with oversized 3x4 downspouts (instead of standard 2x3), a 6-inch system moves roughly twice as much water in the same amount of time.

That difference is the difference between rainwater leaving your roof and rainwater overshooting the gutter onto your foundation, your siding, your fascia, and your shrubs.

When 5-inch is fine

  • Small roof footprints — under 1,200 sq ft per slope
  • Low-pitch roofs where water runs slowly
  • Climates with steady, light rain (not Texas)

When you really want 6-inch

  • Roof footprint over 1,500 sq ft per slope
  • Steeper pitches (6/12 or greater) — water runs faster
  • Houses with deep eaves where overflow lands on the foundation
  • Any house in central or east Texas where a 4-inch hour is normal

The cost gap

On a typical 200 linear-foot run, the difference between a 5-inch and a 6-inch seamless aluminum system is about $300 to $500 installed. That is roughly 10 to 15 percent more for 40 percent more capacity. Easy math.

Other upgrades worth thinking about

While the installer is up there, add hidden hangers (no exposed screws), color-matched fascia trim, and at least a basic micro-mesh leaf guard on the trough. The labor delta is small and you skip three future service calls.
