Vinyl siding has a place in American construction — just not in Texas. After fifteen years in this market, we have stopped offering it as an option. The reasons stack up so consistently across so many service calls that recommending it would be dishonest.
01The Texas heat problem
Vinyl siding is rated for thermal stability up to about 165°F. The south-facing wall of a Texas home in July routinely hits 170 to 190°F surface temperature. At those temperatures, vinyl warps, sags between fasteners, and the seams pull apart. We have walked entire south-facing walls where every other panel is warped and the homeowner thought it was just "settling."
Even worse: reflective surfaces from neighboring homes (low-E windows are the usual culprit) can focus enough sun on a vinyl wall to literally melt the panels. Once-in-a-decade event nationally; we see it 3 to 4 times a year in Tarrant county.
02The hail problem
Vinyl is brittle in cold and impact-prone in warm. One-inch hail will crack vinyl siding consistently. Most carriers will pay for replacement of damaged panels, but you cannot match aged vinyl color in the field — manufacturer color formulations change every 3 to 5 years. So a one-storm claim turns into either a full reside or an obviously patched wall.
03The 8-year refresh nobody mentions
Vinyl manufacturers quote 40-year warranties. Real-world Texas service life: 12 to 18 years before warping, fading, or impact damage forces a full replacement. Cheap up front, but the replacement clock starts running on day one.
- Vinyl installed cost: $4.50 to $6.50/sq ft
- Fiber cement installed cost: $7.50 to $9.80/sq ft
- Vinyl Texas service life: 12 to 18 years
- Fiber cement Texas service life: 30 to 50 years
- Math: vinyl costs more per year of service in this climate
04What we install instead
James Hardie ColorPlus pre-finished fiber cement is our default recommendation. LP SmartSide engineered wood is a close second for owners who want a warmer wood-grain look. Both are hail-tested, heat-stable, and carry warranties that actually match real-world service in Texas.
